Small Changes returned this year with the second edition of its much-anticipated engagement event also known as SC Fest 2025, an event built on the spirit of “Serving It Forward”. The idea of giving back through fun, friendly competition, and community engagement. First introduced in 2023, the festival has quickly grown into one of the Small Changes’ signature initiatives, combining sports, youth empowerment, and social impact under one vibrant roof.

Held on 5th of October 2025 at Batu 10 Complex Badminton Court, Cheras, this year’s SC Fest gathered all Small Changes volunteers, alumni and supporters for an energetic day featuring badminton matches, a lively pickleball tournament, and a bustling carboot sale. The event not only celebrated athletic enthusiasm but also raised funds for a noble cause.

Mission: From Monthly Games to Meaningful Impact

What began as a simple monthly pickleball and badminton session among committee members, originally intended to strengthen teamwork and friendship quickly blossomed into something much bigger as enthusiasm and participation grew. Seeing its potential, Small Changes elevated these casual gatherings into SC Fest, a vibrant platform that now amplifies the organization’s mission of empowering students through education.

Organised under the leadership of Project Director Arash Hadzim and his dedicated team, spearheaded by Secretary General Amiera Batrisyia, this year’s event demonstrated just how much impact a united community can create. More than 70 participants took part in the activities, and over 100 guests attended in support of the cause showcasing the growing reach and resonance of the festival.

Every ringgit raised from SC Fest will be channeled directly into Small Changes’ educational outreach programmes across Malaysia, supporting underserved students through literacy initiatives, mentorship, and holistic development. The festival proudly embodied the core values of the NGO: volunteerism, “them before us,” empowerment, and social consciousness.

Highlights of The Day

SC Fest buzzed with activity from morning to afternoon, offering something for everyone.

Sports Tournaments: Participants showcased spirited competition in badminton and pickleball, drawing cheers from supporters and sparking new friendships across courts.
Carboot Sale: The vibrant carboot market featured alumni and supporters selling pre-loved items, homemade goods, and creative crafts, an eco-friendly fundraising effort with heart.
Lucky Draw: Excitement peaked during the lucky draw session, where attendees eagerly awaited the announcement of prizes sponsored by partners and donors.
Prize-Giving Ceremony: Winners from the tournaments proudly received medals and trophies, celebrating both skill and sportsmanship.
Small Changes Booth: The Small Changes booth drew visitors eager to learn about our outreach efforts and support the cause through merchandise sales.

Crowd Engagement: A Gathering of Old and New Faces

One of the most heartwarming aspects of SC Fest was the reunion-like atmosphere it fostered. Former volunteers from Small Changes’ flagship programmes – Seeds of Deeds 2024: Girls in Action, Seeds of Deeds: I Through Us, and Roots of Resilience returned to reconnect, reminisce, and once again contribute to a cause close to their hearts. Adding to the nostalgic charm, alumni from previous years participated in the carboot sale, strengthening the sense of continuity and community.

Meanwhile, the SC Chill Corner offered a cosy, welcoming space for attendees to rest, socialize, and form new connections, embodying the communal spirit Small Changes has nurtured over the years.

Closure and Lasting Impact

to all participants, donors, partners, and supporters whose enthusiasm and generosity made SC Fest 2025 a memorable success. Special appreciation was also given to the dedicated committee members whose months of planning, coordination, and passion brought the event to life.

SC Fest 2025 proved that when community, sport, and purpose come together, meaningful change becomes both powerful and joyful. With every rally, sale, and conversation, the festival truly lived up to its motto: “Serving It Forward.”

Where The Fire Lit First

It began, not with noise, but with a spark. Not a blueprint. Not a big speech. Just a question quietly burning in our hearts:

What if we went further? What if we gave our hearts to a community we’ve never reached before?

That spark caught fire. And it became Spark The Flame, a project unlike anything Small Changes had done before.

The Spark of a New Beginning

In August 2024, Small Changes travelled deep into Gerik, Perak, through winding roads and boat rides over still waters, to reach a school that has stood quietly and proudly since 1965: SK RPS Pos Kemar. Built with the help of the Malaysian Jungle Squad and JAKOA, this school sits within one of the largest Orang Asli settlements in Malaysia. It isn’t just remote, it’s rooted. Historic. Alive.

This wasn’t just another project. This was a turning point. A new partnership with QBE Foundation and Teach For Malaysia challenged us to think differently, serve more intentionally, and connect more deeply. It was a moment when Small Changes chose to dig its roots deeper into purpose.

“Through our partnership with the QBE Foundation, we identified two key opportunities to make an impact,” shared Atikah Hamid, Vice President of Project Management 2024. “Firstly, we wanted to engage a new group of beneficiaries that aligned with our core mission in supporting underserved communities. Secondly, QBE opened the door for us to explore new directions and expand our reach. That’s how Spark The Flame was born.”
This spark grew into a mission to empower through identity, confidence, education, and leadership.

But before anything could be lit, we knew we had to listen.

Building Trust Through Listening

“From the get go, I think this is really really important for anyone who wants to conduct a programme with a certain community to do because you don’t want to conduct programmes that are out of touch with the community, so balance comes from getting to know them first, and catering your content to their needs,” said Wan Fawwaz, Teach For Malaysia Project Coordinator. “We had a few sessions online where we just focused on learning their cultures, interests, academic level, and lifestyle.”

These early efforts to understand were more than planning; they were the first acts of care. That care shaped everything.

“We simplified our language, used more visual cues, and adjusted our pacing to ensure they could follow along comfortably. Fawwaz even shared a Bahasa Temiar dictionary with us and taught us basic, commonly used words to help us better connect with the students, as this is the primary language spoken within their community,” shared Hannah Sofea, Module Director for Spark The Flame.

A Stage for Expression

What followed were two unforgettable days. Spark The Flame welcomed students from SK Pos Kemar into modules filled with expression, teamwork, curiosity, and moments of magic. One moment stood out more than the rest: Gerik Got Talent.

“We created a fun and supportive environment where they felt comfortable expressing themselves,” said Idham Zamsari, facilitator and module lead. “They chose what they wanted to perform, whether it was singing, dancing, or storytelling. We guided them along the way, and offered encouragement during rehearsals.”

And just like that, a talent show became a symbol of pride. A stage where self-belief took root. That pride stayed long after the lights went out.

“I would constantly get questions from the students about the facilitators,” Fawwaz shared. “Some even pushed me to give a call to one of the facilitators just to check in on them and ask how they’re doing. This is particularly interesting because I never really expected them to grow fond of the facilitators, as that rarely happens to outside visitors.”

Behind the Magic: Challenges and Growth

Behind the scenes, none of it was easy. This project demanded more and gave back even more.

“We had to revisit and rebuild many of our existing processes and SOPs,” said Atikah. “The community we targeted was in a remote area. This was a new experience for us, but we overcame it by having strong on-the-ground partnerships with Teach For Malaysia, which played an important role in supporting our outreach.”

It wasn’t just logistics. It was about understanding and honouring the way this community lived, spoke, moved, and welcomed.

“We also learned new phrases and vocabulary that became helpful when working with the community,” added Amiera Batrisyia, who we fondly called Melb, Secretary General 2024. The most essential preparation that they did was the logistical support, from arranging transport on land and water, checking materials, and securing food to ensure they were able to conduct the project successfully. “With the proper planning we had, these efforts ensure the team is well-prepared and the project is aligned with real needs so that the experience is impactful for the volunteers.”

When things got tough, when words didn’t translate, the team didn’t shy away. They leaned in.

“I used simpler language, more examples, and hands-on guidance,” said Idham. “I also adjusted my tone to be more friendly and made sure they felt safe and comfortable to express themselves.”

Amiera Batrisyia added, “This impact didn’t just impact our community, it shifted us. It deepens our understanding, broadens our perspective, and reminds us of the importance of empathy, patience, and finding meaning beyond words.”

Some moments stick with us forever. A whisper of bravery. A hand was raised. A voice was finally heard.

“It is also nice to see that students who were shy before stepped up and even did a whole performance in front of the crowd during the last day of the programme!” Fawwaz recalled. “Others asked me questions about financial terms they learned in the module days later. That kind of curiosity is rare.”

Looking back, the true success of Spark The Flame wasn’t in what was taught, but what was felt.

“We believe the module served its purpose well within the context of the community. It wasn’t just about delivering content; it was about making the content relatable, accessible, and meaningful to the students. The module created a safe and engaging space where the students felt seen and heard, and that in itself was a win,” said Hannah.

Carrying the Flame Forward

Spark The Flame didn’t just share knowledge. It lit something within them, in us.

And now, in 2025, that flame isn’t just burning. It’s roaring.

Roots of Resilience is here. And we’re going back to where the fire lit first.

This year, we’re returning to Gerik, Perak, to empower 40 Form 4 Orang Asli students. But this isn’t a repeat. It’s a renewal. We’re digging deeper into the soil of service. We’re letting the roots hold us steady. And we’re letting the fire lead the way.

“With the continued support of the QBE Foundation, we see this as a long-term partnership that keeps us grounded in purpose,” said Atikah.

Because when we spark the flame, we don’t walk away. We ignite it and protect it.

We didn’t just light the fire in Pos Kemar. They lit one in us.

And once that fire is lit, you carry it with you. Everywhere you go.

It’s truly inspiring to witness what the Creative and Strategic Planning (CSP) team at Small Changes Malaysia has achieved, and this achievement was only through the first four months into the year. Through their passion, creativity, and relentless effort, they’ve not only built beautiful content but also deep, meaningful connections that boost our mission to make small changes that lead to big differences.

Together As One

At the heart of the CSP team are four brilliant individuals, each with their own strengths, but united by a shared purpose: to inspire change through creativity.
Their belief in the power of storytelling has opened doors to countless hearts, especially those who, like us, believe that even the smallest efforts can create powerful waves of impact.

Small Changes MY’s version of the Fantastic Four are Nabilah Atiqah, our Head of Creatives, who brings stories to life with visuals that speak volumes. Wan Muhammad Fawwaz documents our journey through the lens, capturing moments that stir emotion and drive reflection as our trustee Stills and Films Director. Aida Ameera, our Head of Strategic Planning, carefully keeping an eye out on the details that truly matter. Meor Danish, our ever-organised Vice President, ensures every piece of the puzzle fits perfectly, making sure creativity never exists without purpose.

Together, they’ve created more than a team; they’ve built a rhythm, a synergy, a movement that lives and breathes on our social media feeds and beyond.

Campaigns That Resonate

Their most impressive work on the Ramadan Fundraising Campaign is a perfect example of what happens when creativity meets clarity of purpose. With a vision rooted in empathy and strategy, the campaign reached over 573,000 views and achieved a 198.1% increase in account reach.

But beyond the numbers lies something far more valuable, the emotional connections they sparked. They didn’t just talk about educational inequality; they made people feel it. They turned statistics into stories, and stories into reasons to care. Their content wasn’t just seen, it was felt.

Creativity as Their Superpower

To the CSP team, creativity isn’t just a tool; it’s their loudest voice. They understand that when you want to inspire real change, you have to move beyond facts and figures. You have to move people.

Through thoughtful visuals and powerful narratives, they take difficult, often overlooked issues and make them human. Understandable. Personal. They craft content not just to inform, but to invite, welcoming future volunteers, potential sponsors, and curious minds into the heart of what we do.
And that’s the true magic: turning awareness into action, one post at a time.

When Purpose Meets People

A Team Rooted in Joy and Collaboration

What makes this team truly special is their chemistry. Even in deadlines, they find joy in the everyday moments. Whether it’s sharing desserts, laughing through late-night brainstorming sessions, or spontaneously visiting the KL Illustration Fair together, their bond is real, and it’s the heartbeat of their work.

They thrive in spaces where ideas flow freely. A passing comment in a conversation can spark the next great campaign. Where everyone’s voice matters. It’s this environment of openness and trust that allows creativity to grow wild and bloom.

And just like that, their journey is gaining momentum. With 36 new changemakers (and more joining the committee!) It’s clear that something incredible is taking root. Their work isn’t just attracting attention; it’s inspiring people to step up and be a part of something meaningful.

With every campaign, every post, and every heartfelt effort, they are laying the foundation for something greater than any one of us. A movement led by heart, fueled by creativity, and driven by a shared belief that change is always possible.

So often, we talk about change like it’s some faraway dream, something too big, too distant, too impossible. But the CSP team shows us that change is not a miracle. It’s a choice. A spark. A group of people saying, “Let’s try.”

And when that spark is fueled by love, courage, and creativity, magic happens.

Because of them, stories are no longer silenced. Inequality is no longer invisible. And children who were once overlooked are now being seen, supported, and believed in.

This is more than content. This is heart work. Soul work. The kind that doesn’t just fill timelines, it fills lives with hope.

And if that’s not worth celebrating, we don’t know what is.

A Full Circle Moment: Atikah Hamid’s Journey Back to Where It All Began

Sometimes, the most powerful stories start quietly.

On 27 February 2025, a group of volunteers walked through the gates of Jalan Empat Secondary School (JESS), known as SMK Jalan Empat in Bandar Baru Bangi. They weren’t students. They weren’t teachers. But they were there as changemakers.

Among them was Atikah Hamid, or as many in Small Changes lovingly call her, Tiks. This time, she wasn’t just visiting. She was leading. And not just leading any project. She was bringing PowerUp back to JESS, the very school she once walked through as a student. Now, she returns as the Project Director, ready to give back in a way that felt deeply personal.

It wasn’t just a school visit. It was a full-circle moment.

A New Chapter for PowerUp

This round of PowerUp was unlike any before. For the first time ever, Small Changes collaborated with Ipsos Sdn Bhd, one of our newest partners and sponsors for 2025.

With this collaboration came something beautiful. A double-layered impact. PowerUp didn’t just reach the students. It also reached the Ipsos volunteers, who were trained by the Small Changes team before they became facilitators. That meant we were not only empowering young minds at JESS, but also nurturing a new generation of volunteers to believe in education, in growth, and in giving back.

For Atikah Hamid, that dual mission was clear from the start.

“My main goal was to help Ipsos achieve their objectives while figuring out how to align Small Changes’ goals to create an impactful experience,” she shared.

The Heartwork Behind The Scenes

Getting ready for PowerUp was no easy task. As this was a pilot project with a new format, everything had to be built from the ground up. A lot of heart, strategy, and sleepless nights went into the preparation. The team organised 16 hours of Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions for the Ipsos volunteers. Every detail mattered, from the flow of the lessons, materials for the modules and even how the volunteers would connect with students if they were in their shoes.

“We also prepared detailed guidelines and reference materials to support the Ipsos volunteers, making sure they felt confident and well-prepared to facilitate the session effectively,” Atikah said.

Of course, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. There were moments of doubt, moments of stress, especially during the training period.

“Since it was a pilot project with a new structure and a different type of facilitators, we were concerned about how well they would understand and internalize the entire flow of the project. We manage this by investing more time into the ToT, breaking things down clearly, and staying flexible to adapt based on the volunteers’ needs,” she added.

And that flexibility made all the difference.

When Purpose Meets People

The magic of PowerUp has always been in its people.

This project brought together an amazing mix of the Small Changes team and the Ipsos volunteers. What made it special was how seamlessly everyone worked together. Different people, different backgrounds, but the same heart.

“Everyone brought their strengths to the table, and there was a strong sense of shared purpose throughout the project,” said Atikah.

And the students felt it too.

“Please come again.”

At the end of the day, it wasn’t the numbers or the schedule that made the most impact. It was what the students wrote in their notes.

One moment that stood out for Atikah was reading the students’ handwritten notes that were filled with reflections on what they had learned. Even though PowerUp was just a one-day event, the students were welcoming, supportive, and fully engaged. Their energy was real, their voices were heard, and their hearts were wide open.

Some of them even asked if PowerUp would return.

That simple question, please come again, was all the proof anyone needed that the project mattered. That it worked. That it left a mark.

And the answer?

Yes. PowerUp returned.

The Sequel: PowerUp Reinforced

Just three months later, on 29 and 30 May 2025, Small Changes brought PowerUp: Reinforced back to JESS. This time, the project focused on 160 prefects, students known not only for their intelligence and high literacy, but also their potential to become leaders within their school and beyond.

This continuation was a response to the students themselves. A promise fulfilled.

It’s beautiful to think that what started as a one-day project grew into something that kept giving, building, and empowering. And this time, with even more clarity, intention, and impact.

A Lesson That Lasts

Looking back, Atikah shared one simple but powerful lesson she’ll carry with her:

“Never take feedback lightly. Every comment, whether from beneficiaries, volunteers, or partners, holds valuable insight. Taking the time to really listen and respond thoughtfully can make all the difference in improving future runs.”

And maybe that’s the heart of PowerUp. Listening. Showing up. Giving it your all. Then doing it all again, because the people on the receiving end are invaluable.

More Than a Moment

PowerUp at JESS reminded us of something we often forget.

Change doesn’t need grand stages or fancy titles. Sometimes, it looks like a group of people sitting in a school hall, laughing, learning, and sharing stories.

Sometimes, it’s in the moment when a student looks up and thinks, “Maybe I can do this. Maybe I’m enough.”

Change didn’t shout that day.

It showed up, held space, and left quietly.

But its impact?

It’ll be felt long after we’re gone.

Iman Sufia’s Journey From Small Changes to the Bar

Some people capture moments, while others create them.

Iman Sufia does both.

If you have been part of Small Changes (SC), you have probably seen her behind the camera, capturing every smile, every handshake, and every shared moment of joy. But beyond the lens, Iman has been on a journey of her own.

On 21st March 2025, at the Court of Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Duta, Iman was officially admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. It was a moment that marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Years of hard work, resilience, and an unwavering passion for making a difference led to this incredible milestone.

How It All Began

Iman’s journey with SC started with one simple goal, which is to give back. She has always believed that knowledge should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. Volunteering became her way of making that happen.

“My dream is to share what I have learned and support individuals in their education. That is what led me to SC. Their initiatives align so closely with my aspirations, and joining them has been one of the best decisions I have ever made,” she shared.

At SC, Iman took on the role of photographer and videographer for the Seeds of Deeds Girls in Action (GIA) 2024 project. She captured the transformation of young girls who arrived shy and uncertain but left with newfound confidence. Watching their growth through her lens made her purpose even clearer.

Cherished Moments

If you ask Iman about her most memorable experience at SC, she would say it is impossible to choose just one. But if she had to, the GIA 2024 camp in Penang would be at the top of her list.

“The way our facilitators poured their hearts into teaching the students was something I will never forget. Watching the students grow from hesitant individuals into the bravest people in the room was truly inspiring,” she said.

Beyond that, the teamwork and friendship within SC made the experience even more meaningful.

“No matter how exhausted we were, we always had each other’s backs. The laughter, the late-night talks, and the shared passion – these are the things that made my journey with Small Changes so special.”

A Dream Come True

Last week, Iman reached a huge milestone in her career. The journey to this moment was not just about nine months of pupillage. It took five years and nine months of dedication and sacrifice.

“Seeing the date for my long call on my Notis Perbicaraan brought back every challenge, every long night, and every moment of doubt. But in that instant, I realized it was all worth it,” she said.

Her inspiration to pursue law came from two important figures in her life – her late grandfather and her Bahasa Melayu teacher.

“My grandfather always dreamed of seeing me as a lawyer. I was more focused on becoming a doctor, but looking back, I know he would have been proud to see me standing here today,” she shared.

Facing the Challenges

Studying law is no easy feat. Balancing multiple subjects, handling rigorous coursework, and later transitioning into the fast-paced world of pupillage tested Iman’s resilience.

“There were times I had to juggle seven or eight law subjects in one semester. But I learned that staying focused in lectures, completing tutorial questions, and asking for help when needed made all the difference,” she said.

Pupillage, however, brought a new set of challenges.

“In university, we were trained to answer problem questions with ‘I would advise that…’ but in real practice, you are dealing with actual clients. You have to be sharp, meticulous, and strategic,” she explained.

Her secret to handling the pressure? Staying calm, staying humble, and always doing her best.

Words of Encouragement

For students and young professionals working toward their dreams, Iman has one piece of advice – hard work never betrays you.

“The satisfaction you will feel when you see your success unfold will be worth every struggle. But at the same time, remember to rest when you need to. Never lose sight of your goals, and never be afraid to try. It is always better to be rejected for trying than to regret never trying at all.”

Above all, she holds onto one belief – God’s plan over mine, any day.

“Things may not always go as planned, but I believe there is always a reason behind every turn. Good things will come, sometimes in the most unexpected ways.”

As Iman steps into the next chapter of her journey, one thing is certain. Whether behind the camera or in the courtroom, she will continue making an impact. And this is just the beginning.

Humans of SC: Syafiq Najmuddin

More than just a gold star sticker on the resume, volunteering can also be beneficial to one’s social being, mental health, creativity, life expectancy and others. Nowadays, volunteering in Malaysia is not only limited to a school curricular activity, in fact, everyone can volunteer during their free time, on weekends or even make it a monthly activity.

Among them is Syafiq Najmuddin Jamali, who has been volunteering with Small Changes since he was 18-years-old.

“I discovered SC through a social media post on Twitter. I was 18 and looking for a pastime activity, hence why I decided on joining Seeds of Deeds (SOD) as a facilitator,” shared the 25-year-old.

A student at the time, Syafiq believes that connecting with underprivileged communities is a step towards developing a sense of empathy,

“I am motivated through the thought that I am owed to give back to the communities around me, for all the privileges I have been given in my way growing up.”

Occasionally volunteers would only commit to volunteering every once in a while but Syafiq who has been volunteering for the past five years finds that volunteering with Small Changes gives room for growth.

“At first I only signed up for volunteering where I just came and helped with anything that needed to be done, five years later I find myself holding positions I never dreamed of working with this NGO. My first stint as a facilitator was in 2017, then I joined Seeds of Deeds (SOD) again in 2019 before I became an MD for 2021’s virtual SOD run. I then became two-term VP Projects up to date.”

Having held a few positions, Syafiq says that dealing with the role and tasks has helped him in polishing his interpersonal skills.

“Being in SC has helped me grow so much from a young boy into a man. Volunteering taught me to work in professional settings, and how to improve my communication skills. Essentially I realise that this is a privilege. I strive everyday to be the best version of myself,” adds Syafiq.

But like any other volunteers, Syafiq also had his own fair share of struggles throughout his time of volunteering, “Some of the challenges were unnerving and disheartening, but these challenges have allowed me to continue learning. Team coordination, expectation delivery and taking care of the wellbeing of my committees were all my biggest challenges but none I didn’t and couldn’t get through, all without my helpful teammates.”

Throughout his sessions of volunteering with Small Changes, a core memory that Syafiq remembers is the latest Seeds of Deeds (SOD): Flagship 2023 that commenced at the end of August this year, it was for five days and four nights. The module themes of the project include future pathways, individual insight, and self-management.

“This year’s SOD Project is where I get to witness my committees, whom I am happy to call my best friends bloom and reap the rewards of their hard work. I can never forget my last Xi Shua Shua dance.” Xi-Shua Shua is a must-do dance in every SC programme during module breaks or fitness time.

Expanding his social circle has helped Syafiq broaden his perspective and help his peers to become confident with who they are.

“Whilst volunteering I have made so many friends from all kinds of different backgrounds. On trying to work on a better me, I also manage to help those around me. From the subtlest ways of having the courage to raise their hand, encouraging others to excel together, and getting over their stage fright to speak in front. In the best way, I am happy that one of my 2017 SOD students is now a facilitator, and I am happy that by the last day of every camp, students were out of their shell, a better version of themselves than they were yesterday.”

As a newbie, Syafiq understands that volunteering for the first time and not knowing anyone around you can be daunting. His advice to newbies is to always keep an open mind to new experiences.

“Developing my composure has helped me measure when to listen, speak and to take action accordingly. Sometimes all it takes to diffuse an unfavorable situation is to listen and acknowledge the incident. Always go out of your shell. I keep myself on my toes through constant conversations with strangers or new friends – it helps build an approachable persona and creates mutual trust,’ says Shafiq.

To those who plan to volunteer in the future Syafiq has one advice to share,

“Volunteer with the aim to be the best version of yourself. Changing the world is a big ask – but changing yourself for the better is a challenge worthy of all your efforts. Only through being the best version of yourself, do we have the capacity and aura to help others around us do the same.”

There is without an iota of doubt that volunteering brings significant impact to our lives whether we are looking for a small change or a big one, the journey that volunteering brings can be an unexpected memory that can simply help you reach your goal towards working on yourself, the community and making the world a better place.

Hello! I’m Hannah Annessa, born in Kuantan, Pahang and raised in Shah Alam, Selangor. As a final year Accounting student at UITM, I am currently doing my auditing internship at Deloitte Malaysia.

I first joined Small Changes as a volunteer for Seeds of Deeds (SOD) 2021, then decided to join as a committee a year later. I am now SC’s Fundraising Officer.

I was introduced to Small Changes by a good friend of mine during the Movement Control Order (MCO) in 2021. It all started with simply wanting to accompany a friend in volunteering, out of boredom. Since we had all the free time at home, I thought: maybe I could do something useful with all the time I had besides focusing on my academics. Then, I started stalking SC’s social media and became interested in one of the programs, Seeds of Deeds 2021. It was my very first virtual volunteering experience and I enjoyed every second of it from planning to executing the projects.

On the final day of SOD 2021, we planned to have a photography session with the beneficiaries, virtually. However, all of them turned off their cameras just as we were about to take the picture. We thought they were shy or perhaps sad that the program was over. Suddenly, they turned on their cameras with a “Thank you” sign to us, the volunteers and committee members. Such a sentimental moment it was, that recalling it would always put a smile on my face. At that moment, I felt appreciated. Though we weren’t able to meet face to face, we were still able to create such a meaningful bond. Online volunteering could be hard, but if implemented thoughtfully, it could be a valuable tool to support and uplift underprivileged students, providing them with opportunities for growth, empowerment, and a brighter future.

The bond between the volunteers and the SC committee is definitely something I am not able to gain anywhere else, since SC brings together like-minded individuals who are dedicated to making a difference. By joining SC, I became part of a community of conscious individuals who share ideas, collaborate on projects, and work together towards a common goal.

Not to forget, the act of giving back to the community and making a positive impact on the beneficiaries brings a deep sense of happiness and joy to me. Knowing that my actions are benefiting others directly, be it the community or future generations, creates a profound sense of fulfilment.

Fast forward till now, Small Changes has become a part of me.

The most meaningful project to me would be the Tuai Kasih Project (TKP). It was my very first time engaging with students from a correctional institution, and it definitely opened my eyes, broadened my perspective, and fostered personal development. I developed a module with my module partner within a week and it was a rewarding experience executing the module since I was able to contribute to our beneficiaries’ growth, well-being, and successful reintegration into society while fostering personal growth and empathy within myself. I was privileged enough to grow up comfortably with the love and support from friends and family and I realised that not everyone gets to live that way. Joining TKP gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who have been incarcerated.

One challenge I face in SC would be time-management. I joined SC when I had ample time for myself, when the only commitment I had back then was my academic classes. Now, I have transitioned into corporate life with a fixed schedule of 8 to 5. Hence, I struggled to find time to squeeze in SC commitments after a whole tiring day in the corporate world. Luckily, in SC, I have been blessed with teammates who are very understanding and flexible when it comes to work commitment, helping me tide through hectic periods. I feel supported and valued, which is why I remain committed to SC and hope to be able to contribute with my best.

As a whole, my SC experience would be: eye-opening, empowering and humbling.

To future volunteers, remember to stay humble and grateful. Recognise the privilege of being able to volunteer and having the opportunity to make a difference. Stay humble in your actions and interactions, and express gratitude for the trust and appreciation you receive from those you serve.

Hello and hi everyone! My name’s Naqieb, and I’m turning 26 this year. I live in Kuala Lumpur and I have been “securing the bag” by working as a Climate Policy Analyst.

I stumbled upon Small Changes back in 2021. It was a normal day for me, as I scrolled endlessly through my social media until I came upon my friend’s post about Small Changes on their account. What intrigued me the most at the time was the beneficiaries involved in one of their programmes, which is, Project Beanstalk.

The indigenous community has always been an important part of our country’s history, ever since its inception. Though, they are often discriminated as they are unable to access the basic needs like proper housing, water, and education. I was, of course, riveted to learn more about this community and how to help them.

I just knew I had to sign up as a volunteer, or else I would regret it, to a certain extent. Well, one action leads to another, and somehow fate has decided to let me stay with Small Changes by letting me become their Media Editor for this year.

Project Beanstalk 2021 gave me fruitful lessons to learn, which I have held on till this day. It was definitely not easy at first to volunteer and to put myself out there, but with time and support from the rest of the team, I was able to enjoy the entire experience. In 2022, I joined Small Changes as a committee and worked on Project Beanstalk again, developing another set of modules, formulating activities and designing the handbook.

I also had a nice experience fundraising for Project Beanstalk 2021. Despite having sponsors to conduct the projects, volunteers are required to fundraise in order to get the full “volunteer package experience”. For my part, I was able to reconnect with something I used to love doing, but had lost touch with a long time ago – painting. At the end of the fundraiser, I was able to secure RM205 that has been used for the beneficiaries.

It was daunting at first, I’m not going to lie. I was never good with children, and there was an incident during Project Beanstalk when the beneficiary thought I was too scary. The first thing I did was assess the situation, and tried to be more approachable to the children. I’d put myself in their mindset and bring out the child in me, treating them like a friend. The strategy worked and the kids grew to love me as much as I love them.

2. LukeIAmYourFather: What is your advice to those who are interested in volunteering, but are afraid to take the leap to do so?

You only live one life, so think about the legacy you choose to leave behind. You can choose to be remembered as someone who has given their all, or someone who never bothered about anything. Try to put your personal gains aside because it’s a harsh world out there, and it’s even harsher to those in need. Be a part of the building block for the future generation by volunteering!

3. NaqiebsBiggestFan: Name two things you’ve learned from volunteering with Small Changes?

Firstly, my purpose in life.

I have always been searching for the reason why I am put in this world, the purpose of having this life inside of me. I am not 100% good, but I feel that the more you volunteer, the more you can give back to people and the society. There’s so much negativity in this life that we need more positivity by simply giving and helping out.

Secondly, what it meant to be human.

These two things I have learned are actually correlated to one another, – one is not able to exist without the other. With Small Changes I was able to understand what it meant to be human via the human connections that I have established with the committee members as well as the beneficiaries that I have met.

4. WhyDidYouLeftMeOnRead: How do you manage your time between your full-time job and Small Changes?

By being flexible and agile! It can be overwhelming at times, which is completely valid, but try to be flexible with your time. Find out your strengths and use it to your advantage. For example, I do not work well with structured plannings so I get my tasks done according to my own flexible timing.

Hello, lovelies! My name is Nur Ain Fatihah, a 22-year-old Kedahan currently staying in Perak. I am a 2nd-year Bachelor in Oil and Gas Engineering student. I first participated in the Seeds of Deeds (SOD) empowerment camp as a beneficiary back in 2016. Now, I am a committee member and video editor at Small Changes Malaysia.

My journey with Small Changes started when my homeroom teacher forced me to join SOD. To be honest, I was not a fan of motivational camps as most of the camps that I joined previously had the same cliché activities conducted in an environment that was filled with shouting, scolding, and unnecessary punishments like “ketuk-ketampi” for students who came late. Punishments like these robbed us of our confidence and made us feel insecure, which was a clear deviation from the camps’ goal of motivating others. Thus, upon hearing about SOD, my first thought was, “Will it be a bummer? Will it be another hellish experience?”

However, what followed was the complete opposite. All the sweat, tears, and laughter throughout the 3-day educational camp evoked an indescribable feeling in me. SOD was completely different from any other camp I had attended. It was an empowerment camp that used English as the main medium of communication and aimed to tackle the issue of education inequality. The modules that were delivered during the camp not only strengthened our knowledge but also helped us to discover and refine our talents. They moulded us into more holistic people that were capable of tackling the new, demanding millennial era.

When the camp first started, we were all very shy and mostly kept to ourselves. However, the “Tepuk-tepuk Support” and “Tepuk-tepuk Good Job” chants worked wonders for our confidence. We began to speak in front of groups and encouraged our friends as they overcame long-standing fears and anxieties. It was truly heartwarming to witness our confidence levels skyrocketing during such a short period. Speaking as one of the beneficiaries, we couldn’t have done it without the help of the devoted and motivated facilitators who were eager to share their journeys with us. Their energy and positivity inspired us to keep on learning, dream big, and most importantly, keep on loving ourselves.

We ended the camp feeling encouraged and hopeful, and were filled with new knowledge and values. It also sparked a desire in us to be part of the movement in eradicating education inequality in the nation and making a difference, one small change at a time.

When COVID-19 hit Malaysia, it was heartbreaking to see students struggling and getting beaten down with no motivation to pull through. Their desperate need for support and empowerment reminded me of Small Changes and I felt the need to give back to the ones who encouraged and inspired me. Browsing through Small Changes’ Instagram page led me to a post on an extended 21/22 Committee Recruitment. I seized the opportunity immediately and applied to be a committee member. The application process went smoothly and it was exciting to be interviewed by the lovely Vice President of Strategic Planning and friendly Human Resources Officers.

A few days after the interview session, I was over the moon upon receiving an offer letter to work as a video editor. The job scopes include editing videos and liaising with the corresponding person in charge of certain events and projects. I was also honoured to receive an offer from the Project Director of SC Belajar to be part of their team.

SC Belajar is a pilot programme focusing on creating after-school development programmes for Malaysian youth. We emphasise the knowledge and skills that we think are important for our youth to explore but are not necessarily taught in schools. For this term, we created three videos – “Spot A Scam”, “The Great Escape”, and “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay”. I was in charge of creating animation videos for “The Great Escape” and “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay”. All the video animations have been released on our official YouTube channel “Small Changes” on the 8^th of October 2022. Do give them a watch!

SC Belajar also collaborated with Seeds of Deeds (SOD) and produced some of the modules that were implemented during the camps this year. Seeing the beneficiaries utilise the module that I had a part in creating was a truly wonderful experience.

At Small Changes, I’ve met inspiring and motivated people from many walks of life, and we’ve worked together to make a difference in our society with sheer will and determination. We shed blood, sweat, and tears together to ensure that we could give our beneficiaries the best. This year was also unlike any other as we successfully completed a staggering number of four projects – “Aspire To Inspire”, “Project Beanstalk”, “Seeds of Deeds” and “SC Belajar”. The memories I created with the team will forever be etched in my heart. Overall, it was truly a remarkable experience for me to be a part of the committee and the beneficiaries’ journeys.

Last but not least, to our beloved reader, it’s not too late to take this opportunity to embark on a journey with us. SC is a safe space for everyone. Hello everyone! I am Aqil Ikhwandi, a 23-year-old, a Sabahan-by-heart, and a 3rd-year Bachelor of Accountancy student. I started as a volunteer in the Seeds of Deeds (SOD) empowerment camp in 2021, and I am now one of the Public Relations Officers for Small Changes MY (SC).

I was privileged to grow up having everything I wanted but I also knew that there were others who did not have the same luxury as I did. During my high school days, it occurred to me that volunteering with underprivileged children would allow me to spread the joy I experienced during my childhood.

When I first found out about Small Changes MY back in 2019, I was determined to volunteer with them. I even turned on their post notifications on Instagram so that I’d get the latest updates on their projects. Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to volunteer then as I was living in Sabah and was too far from where SC was based at.

In 2020, COVID-19 struck the world by storm and gave everyone a hard time. It was a painful experience for me to get stuck at home and do everything online. It took me about 6 months to finally change my perspective on the situation. Although the pandemic was still a bummer, I realised that there were small blessings to be found. One of those small blessings came in the form of virtual volunteering projects! Distance was no longer an issue for me as all I needed was a stable internet connection.

I was finally able to work with SC as a volunteer in their 2021 SOD Virtual Camp. The project was a 3-day empowerment camp involving 3 schools from rural areas. Students from these schools got to participate in modules designed to equip them for their future after secondary school. SOD was my first volunteering experience outside of my school and university and I was thrilled to be one of the 30 facilitators in the camp.

The facilitators were divided into pairs and each pair was entrusted to come up with activities for different modules. It was not as easy as I thought it’d be as SC’s committee members had high standards – they were determined to make all activities engaging and aspired to have a positive impact on all 70 beneficiaries. Although the workload was slightly more than I expected when I signed up to be a volunteer, I enjoyed it as I felt involved and significant to the SOD camp.

During the 3-day virtual camp, I can’t deny that it was quite draining. There were so many things to take note of, and every facilitator needed to know the flow for all 15 modules. We also had to showcase an optimistic attitude and be proactive to encourage the beneficiaries to participate in the modules.

It was a hard but painless experience mainly because the committee members made things easier by explaining everything to the facilitators. They shared tips on how to increase the beneficiaries’ involvement and gave us affirmations along the way. SC’s committee members were very supportive throughout the entire camp and always made us feel important and welcomed.

At the end of the camp, the students told us how much they enjoyed it and what they learned from the modules. It was wonderful getting to see some of them coming out of their shells and seeing their personalities bloom during those 3 days. It was also great to see friendships blossoming between the committee members and facilitators despite everything being virtual. These are the reasons why out of all the programs I joined in school and university, SOD was the one that gave me the most sense of fulfilment.

When SC started recruiting for the new term, I immediately seized the opportunity and applied to be part of their committee. Alhamdullilah, I was chosen to be one of the Public Relations Officers for Small Changes MY for the 2021/2022 term.

It has been about 3 months as an SC committee member and it feels great being around like-minded individuals who want to contribute to the betterment of society. Everyone here is very friendly and the Executive Committee are very helpful in guiding us in our tasks and job scopes. I even managed to volunteer at Section 7 at PPS Dewan Kiambang during the flood last December through a connection I made with a fellow SC committee member!

Overall, I am very excited to embark on this journey together with my team and I am very grateful that I’m involved with Small Changes MY.
