It was Saturday morning, and the sky before me was growing brighter by the minute. As I drove my little mint-coloured car across the relatively empty Kuala Lumpur highway, a gentle smile met my lips when I drew closer to the venue of today’s visit.
Asrama Bahagia Kuala Lumpur, the sign across me read.
There was an enormous, daunting-looking metal gate separating life from inside the Asrama and outside, – from the real world. When I drove into the compound, the security uncle locked the metal gates behind me, the sound of the metal slamming against each other catching my attention.
With 10 minutes left to spare, the Tuai Kasih Project will commence soon, and I quickly turn the ignition to my car shut.
The Tuai Kasih Project is a new initiative by Small Changes MY, with the collaboration of Axiata Foundation to provide exposure to the beneficiaries regarding digital literacy, altogether increasing digitalisation in their daily lives.
Digitalisation, which includes the use of computers, tablets, mobile phones as well as its softwares, has been proven to be vital for humans alike ever since the COVID-19 pandemic struck us back in 2020. Since then, we have had a massive change in the way we study and work, as online learning and working from home became the norm to prevent the spread of the virus.
Over the years we have only seen rapid growth in the use of these gadgets in order to continue moving forward in life. Not wanting our beneficiaries to drown back in the present day’s waves, the Tuai Kasih Project was born to ensure that they are constantly in line with what the future has in store for them.

The first visit happened on 11th of March 2023, with 35 beneficiaries who are 35 girls from Asrama Bahagia, Kuala Lumpur. A week prior, 10 volunteers from the committee members got together online almost every night, to create modules that would be useful for the beneficiaries in terms of digitalisation.
With the help of the higher executive committees, four modules were crafted, surrounding the theme of ‘Digitalisation in Daily Life’. They were named ‘Productive Me!’, ‘Good Health Greater Minds’, ‘Mindful Me!’, and ‘Mind Over Matter’.
Despite Tuai Kasih Project’s theme surrounding around digitalisation, the beneficiaries of Asrama Bahagia are currently not individually equipped with devices such as computers, tablets and mobile phones. Hence, the Small Changes team formulated modules that are interrelated with daily digitalisation, which is productiveness and mindfulness in hopes that the beneficiaries will find them impactful and useful in their near future.
The one-day programme kicked off with the Good Health Greater Minds module, as the beneficiaries were brought out in the morning Sun to exercise with a few songs playing in the background.

Next came the Productive Me! module, in which the beneficiaries were informed on how to utilise their 24 hours a day carefully, segregating their hours for work, entertainment and life through a treasure-hunt-like activity. This module also introduced them to online applications such as digital planner, period tracker, and Google calendar that they may utilise to increase their productivity.
In the afternoon, after lunch break and prayers, the beneficiaries got into their zen mode as they are shown several ways to destress and be mindful to themselves during the Mindful Me! module. The main highlight of this session is when the beneficiaries get to unlock their Shakespere and Picasso skills during the journaling session, as writing and drawing out your feelings is a good way to organise your thoughts and feelings, altogether reducing your stress.
The final module, Mind Over Matter provided the beneficiaries with an insight on how to persevere in the ever-changing, ever-harsh world. The first visit of the Tuai Kasih Project at Asrama Bahagia Kuala Lumpur ended on a good note as all of the girls were still energised and attentive until the end of the day.
The visit ended right before the clock struck 5pm, and with all of the knowledge that was poured towards the beneficiaries, I really do hope that they make use of them in their daily lives, to constantly grow to become a better person.

From the little recreational lot that the Asrama Bahagia had, I could see the KL Tower and the Merdeka 118 building glossing over due to the Sun’s reflection. It felt ironic to me that these girls were surrounded with all of these advanced buildings, but are constantly the subject of being left behind from any sort of development.
I hope just like these buildings they are surrounded with, the girls will soar up high, if not higher, in their future too.
