Unity

by Ashley Loo Ann Ling

Unity is about being together in both good and hard times. It is a bond and it makes us feel whole. Unity is something that we can collectively be united about generally. That being said, it is not easy to create a unison among different people with different ways of thinking and it is even more difficult to maintain it for a long time. It is easy to discuss how powerful can the word ‘unity’ be in terms of being united but to fully embrace the idea of unity but it is also important to know and understand its difficulties as well.

Firstly, one of the challenges of people achieving ‘unity’ is due to our inconsistency in reconciling with our differences. Unity can inspire, help people, in good ways but people change due to life experience. When you are united, you are united as one for a cause. But when people and society change, our minds will think differently and have changes in our opinions. That will lead us to various disagreements and make us drift apart from each other. It depends on the individual as to how they manage to reconcile with their differences to make it work with the people around us.

Furthermore, ‘unity’ just cannot be achieved by humans at times because our own opinions are strong that we usually disagree with one another in a situation and cannot meet each other halfway. Besidies that ‘Unity’ is incredibly difficult to achieve as certain sections of people have massive egos, as everything must go their way. If it doesn’t end up how they want it to, they will most likely go separate ways and their ‘unity’ if gone, just like that. People with strong personalities and egos have their own reasons why they are like that in the first place due to past experiences. This makes it extremely difficult at times for people to work together.

"Unity sounds simple when we talk about it, but it’s only when differences clash and egos rise that we truly see how fragile this bond can be. Can we overcome our divisions and truly come together as one?"

However, I do believe that in spite of the differences, we can achieve unity and embrace it. One of its factors is love. For example, A husband and wife. They are united as one which makes them whole, they are united because of their love for each other, but their marriage will not be perfect. They might disagree on certain things and argue. Which is why any forms of connection with people is a process. It makes them grow and mature. In the end, it’s their undying love and passion for each other that makes them united and take care of each other, and sharing their energy with each other to grow more. This makes them united, or what we can say as, unity.

In conclusion, ‘Unity’ can be achieved if we embrace a fundamental belief that humanity can set aside differences and make the world a better place. We understand what it means of being united but the real question is, can we put everything aside to work for it? The idea of a united Earth.
